Gut Health Specialist

The gastrointestinal system (the gut) is an area of the body that can give crucial information about whether your body is functioning properly.
The gut is involved in activities that affect every single cell in the body. It is in the gut where we gather our nutrients and make most of our immune chemicals, it is also responsible for 95% of the body's production of serotonin, a chemical that influences mood, appetite, sleep and metabolism. Recent research also shows that serotonin from the gut acts as a hormone to regulate bone mass.
Specific conditions such as IBS, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, gallstones are more obviously considered as a problem within the gut.
However food allergens, toxins, sugar, antibiotics, parasites and particularly stress can wreak havoc with your gastrointestinal system, upsetting the balance in your intestines as well as allowing harmful substances to enter your system. Lack of energy and Chronic Fatigue can often be traced to problems in the gut.

What to Expect

At your initial consultation we will look at your health as a whole with the understanding that the gut is an important system within a body of systems, and cannot be looked at in isolation.
You will be asked about your present health together with past and family health history, also your diet, lifestyle and levels of stress, and asked varying questions i.e. did your symptoms develop after an 'acute' infection, travel or the use of antibiotics.
A decision can then be made as to whether changes in diet or lifestyle is all that is needed to help you to get your health back on track.
For some it may be necessary to recommend specific laboratory diagnostic tests, to gain more of an insight into your health problem/s.

The Laboratories used for diagnostic testing operate to ISO standards (international organisation for standardisation) and participate in NEQAS (national external quality assessment.
The Laboratories are led by medical pathology consultants from a variety of pathology disciplines they are available to interpret results if necessary.
